There are quite a few free keyword research tools out there. However, I think I have found a pretty awesome combination tool that makes keyword research really easy and within a few minutes you generate a giant list of keywords with some data on search volume and average CPC (cost per click).
First, let’s take a look at why keyword research is import and then let’s take a look at how you can use a browser add-on called Keywords Everywhere and a site called Ubersuggest to create an awesome keyword list.
Why Is Keyword Research Important?
Knowing how to do keyword research can be beneficial in many aspects of online marketing.
As a blogger, I do keyword research to find out what topics relevant to my niche that people are searching for in Google and other search engines.
If I write an article around a certain keyword that I find, I am more likely to rank for that keyword in Google. Having a list of relevant keywords also makes it easier to come up with topics to write about to begin with.
For example, I recently launched my FPTraffic blog and one of the first things I did was keyword research to find out what topics about Facebook Pages and Fan Pages that people are searching about.
I generated a massive list of keywords, saved them as a draft in my blog WordPress admin, and now I’m publishing articles about those topics.
As a marketer, I do keyword research to try to find keywords I can bid on in Google AdWords and Bing Ads relevant to my niche that I can use to funnel people to articles or landing pages in hopes of generating a lead or sale.
You should do your own keyword research on the keyword tools specific to the ad network you are using, but it’s good to be able to generate a list to get your research started in the right direction.
For example, I will build a list of keywords using the method I’m going to outline below to run on Bing, but when I’m setting up my campaign on Bing Ads, I will also check their keyword tool to see what the data and suggested keywords they are giving me is as well.
Keywords Everywhere and Ubersuggest
Keywords Everywhere is an awesome free browser add-on that will add keyword data to searches on certain sites (like Ubersuggest) for you.
I found Keywords Everywhere on ProductHunt and I’ve been using it ever since. Setting it up on your computer is pretty easy:
- Install their add-on to your Chrome or Firefox browser. You can download the add-on for your browser at KeywordsEverywhere.com.
- Sign up for a free API key here.
- Add the API key to your add-on settings.
- You’ll immediately start seeing keyword data when searching on Google and other sites.
You can really harness the power of this awesome tool when you combine it with Ubersuggest.
I first wrote about Ubersuggest in 2011 and it’s still one of my favorite keyword research tools. There have been many improvements to Ubersuggest since 2011, but overall, it’s still the same awesome tool.
The addition of keyword data from Keywords Everywhere makes it even better though.
When you have Keywords Everywhere installed and do a search on Ubersuggest, the extension automatically adds columns with monthly search volume, CPC, and competition data (shown above).
You can build a massive list of keywords with a ton of awesome data simply by favoriting the keywords you like (or all of them using the Add All Keywords button appended to the bottom of the page) and then clicking the My favorite keywords link in the Keywords Everywhere menu.
When you do that, Keywords Everywhere will have a giant list of all your keywords in a table that you can sort. Sort the table by volume and focus on the keywords at the top of the list.
This is an amazingly easy way to do free keyword research and get a ton of great data that you work with for your search ppc campaigns or blogging.
When I first started this blog, I wrote a ton of articles based on my keyword research using Ubersuggest to find what people were searching about when they needed to know something about PeerFly. Search engine optimization and marketing has changed a lot since then, but the premise is still the same. If you create great content around topics people are interested in, Google will like you and you will get traffic from it.
If that doesn’t work, at least you’ll know what keywords to bid on for your paid search campaigns
