Fascinating Facts About Domain Names

There’s More To Domain Names Than You May Think

It may surprise you to learn that the idea of the online addressing system was invented way back in 1983. Yup, thirty-two years ago, a computer systems company from Cambridge was the first ever to register a domain.

The name? Symbolics.com.

The now defunct Symbolics Computer Corporation registered the domain name and sold it in 2009 it to XF.com Investments for an undisclosed amount. Ever since then, domain names has been a critical part in website branding and search engine optimization (SEO). Choosing the right domain name can get some additional benefits for your business and make your website more appealing to new visitors.

Currently, there are more than 330.6 million registered domain names and the number is increasing exponentially. Domain names are big business. In fact, I know several people in digital marketing who make millions of dollars a year just buying and selling domains.

The 10 most expensive domain name sales of all time?

  1. lasvegas.com = $90,000,000.00 (Wow!)
  2. carinsurance.com = $48,700,000.00
  3. insurance.com = $35,600,000.00
  4. vacationrentals.com = $35,000,000.00
  5. privatejet.com = $30,180,000.00
  6. internet.com = $18,000,000.00
  7. 360.c0m = $17,000,000.00

  9. bankaholic.com = $15,000,000.00
  10. sex.com = $13,000,000.00

Like I said… big bucks are involved. How much is a domain name worth? Simply the amount someone is willing to pay for it, however crazy it may seem to others.

The infographic below, created by websitebuilderau.com will fill you in on some fascination facts on domain names:

Other interesting domain name facts:

  • Prior to 1995 domain name registrations were free. Isn’t that crazy? In that year, Network Solutions became the first company allowed to charge money for domain names. The price for domains names in the beginning were a lot higher than they are now. Individual domains started at $100 for a 2 year registration period. Domain registration prices are now around $10 per year depending upon the type of promotion you may find. This price drop was facilitated by the formation of ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) which controls all domain registrations today.
  • In 1987, the 100th domain was registered, meaning it took the Internet nearly 2 years to hit the 100-site milestone. Today, 100 sites are registered every few milliseconds.
  • Google.com was originally supposed to be Googol.com. It became Google.com due to a simple clerical error. Ironically, at the time, google.com was available and googol.com was not so it may have changed in the end anyways.
  • In 2003, Microsoft forgot to renew their registration for Hotmail.co.uk. Oops.
  • Every single three-character-combination domain name is taken. In fact, this occurred back in 1997. You can still buy three character domain names in the secondary market if you’ve got some deep pockets.  Three character domains are popular because they are short and easy to remember.
  • Some dude named Mike Mann holds the record for most domains registered in a single day. Mike registered 14,962 domains in a 24-hour period, in April 2012, setting the record that stands to this today. Why you ask? He claimed he wanted to “own the world”.
  • Domain names are typically registered for periods of one to ten years at a time, but one company, Network Solutions, allows you to register a domain for an astonishing period of up to 100 years.
